Root canals are a vital treatment if the root or pulp has become infected from either a cavity or injury. Many myths circle around the idea of root canals being very painful, that you should just get a full tooth replacement, or they can cause you to get sick. These rumors have been proven false with research, and the evidence of modern advancements and technology shows how root canal therapy is a more convenient and cost-efficient way to save the natural tooth.

Here at Sheffield Square Dental Care, we strive to provide the comfort and restoration you need to relieve you of pain. Part of our root canal therapy procedure includes the following steps:

– First, a local anesthetic is administered by your dentist, numbing the tooth. A rubber dental dam surrounding the tooth will keep it dry and clean while your dentist performs the root canal.

– The middle of the tooth will then be accessed with small tools, creating an opening on top. The damaged and diseased pulp will then be removed with files. Any remaining pulp will be washed out with water, and your tooth chamber will then be cleaned and dried. An antimicrobial solution will be applied after, killing any remaining bacteria.

– A rubber-like material, gutta percha, will be used to fill the chamber. A temporary filling may be placed on top of the opening while you wait for your permanent crown. This permanent crown will be shaped from a sample made by your dentist and sent in to be shaped. A post may be placed in the chamber as well during the procedure if needed.
