Children don’t come with training manuals. Thankfully, our team here at Sheffield Square Dental Care in Chicago, Illinois, is happy to help you guide your children’s oral health and hygiene habits.
As soon as your child gets their first tooth, you’ll want to get a baby toothbrush and clean it with warm water every morning and every night. You’ll continue brushing their teeth and flossing for them when they have two teeth next to each other until they are old enough to do so on their own, which will probably be around the age of five.
While you are helping them, this is the perfect time to get them in the habit of knowing when to brush and floss, what to use, and how to do it. If you teach them right, they’ll be more likely to keep these habits throughout their lives.
Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush, and angle it towards the gums and teeth. Teach your child to move it gently and slowly back and forth along the teeth and gums. Also, don’t forget to brush the tongue, so you can remove any other bacteria on the surface. A great tool we offer at our office is the Sonicare FlexCare Toothbrush that is efficient in cleaning between the teeth as well as the gums.
Choose the type of floss that is most convenient for you and your child – whether that be floss picks or traditional floss. If you choose traditional floss, cut an 18 inch piece and wrap it around your index finger on one hand and the thumb of the other hand. Ask your child to open their mouth wide. Starting at the back, gently nudge the floss behind their back teeth, then alternating arches, move forward to the other side of the mouth.
You can start dental visits as soon as your child gets their first tooth or around the age of one. Please call us today at 773-409-4097 to set up an appointment with Dr. Eliot Tokowitz.
